£499 a year, or £49.99 a month, plus VAT.
Hosting is the easy part. What you are actually paying for is somebody who knows your website, keeps it updated, fixes it when it breaks, and answers the phone.
The questions below are the ones clients actually ask, and the answers are mine rather than a marketing department's.
Yep, that's right. Reasonable text and image amends to the website are included in the yearly charge. Not bad. This means you can email me direct and say something along the lines of "Hey Will, can you change the telephone number on the contact page" or "Hey Will, Tim from HR needs his headshot switched" and I'll be like "sure, no problemo".
The key concepts here are "reasonable" and "minor", and from experience this is certainly not a problem. Most websites need a minor tweak here or there each month, whether it's a line of text, a little logo to add at the bottom, or so and so's email address has changed. All that kind of stuff is included.
If we're talking about adding new pages, functionality that isn't already there, or the number of requests is getting out of hand, I'll politely let you know and tell you how long the additional changes are going to take. Anything beyond the minor amends is charged at the standard studio hourly rate, currently £62.50 per hour plus VAT.
That's the best way I can think to describe it. You have my mobile number and my email, and as part of the yearly managed hosting charge you're welcome to pick my brain about anything and everything you have in mind for the website.
I've been building websites for over 20 years, so I have a pretty deep knowledge of a wide range of techniques and technologies. It's an ever changing landscape though, so it's still a great pleasure to push out the boundaries and find cool new stuff. Whatever you're having problems with, or thinking of exploring, I can be your sounding board, agony aunt, or wise web sage.
Oh yeah. I did lots of these, especially during the first lockdown. Great fun. I love it when a client feels confident with their own website, particularly if they're uploading new products, blogs or articles on the reg.
To help you feel more at ease with the day to day running of the WordPress site, we can arrange Zoom tutorials so you learn a little more about how the whole system works.
Fair question, and it comes up. Honestly, it isn't very expensive at all once you consider the help and advice you get across the year, and the hours of head-against-wall time it saves you.
Website hosting, and especially website management, can be a massive pain. A broken SSL, a buggy redirect, a page error, a glitch in the Matrix. There's all manner of annoying things that go wrong with websites, even on the best of days. The yearly cost buys peace of mind and a knowledgeable pair of hands that has your back all year round.
No worries at all. There are a million other companies offering website hosting. Some of it is crazy cheap and also complete rubbish, so watch yourself out there.
If you want something more affordable that still cuts the mustard, my top recommendation is Flywheel, who offer some great packages for WordPress hosting. You can check out Flywheel hosting here.
Grow Creative Ltd is a company I started while I was still doing my design degree at Goldsmiths. I was already building websites for people in 2005, and they needed to be hosted somewhere, but nobody knew anything about hosting, so I rolled up my sleeves and started offering it as a service.
Sean and I started working together as Design House in 2013, but Grow Creative continued to handle the billing for website hosting and maintenance. Partly for tax reasons, partly because it's a dry and techy service and Design House is more of a design studio flex. Think of it as a sister company to Design House Studio Ltd, one that focuses on hosting and support.
Got a project in mind?
Send us a message, or call one of us directly on our mobiles. If you are in Berkhamsted, or anywhere in Hertfordshire really, Sean is in the Berkhamsted studio and is probably your best bet on 07752 964 078. If you are up in North London and would rather meet in person, give William a ring on 07989 199 030.
Introductory chats are free of charge, with no obligation attached at all.
